Why USC Won't Get My #1 Ranking

There's a sweet, delicious, fattening pandemic sweeping college football.  I'm referring, of course, to the burgeoning number of big programs scheduling sure-win cupcake games against tiny schools in the name of padding stats and wallets.  In a preseason column, the Wiz explains thusly:

The excuse given for scheduling creampuffs is that good, old State U. needs a few tuneups before playing legitimate competition. This, of course, is a big, fat lie. The real reason is that coaches and athletic directors like their big, fat paychecks. Going to a bowl game every year virtually guarantees another year on the coach's contract. And if the coach doesn't get fired, the athletic director has nothing to worry about. Win-win and cash in.

Say what you will about USC's head coach Pete Carroll, and plenty of you will say plenty, but he schedules like a man--usually.  Instead of romp-stomping over a local Division II school to open the season, he took his squad cross-country to play Virginia.  The Trojans have had a yearly rivalry game with Notre Dame since Notre Dame was good.

But I just can't get next to these "Ohio State Buckeyes" as a worthy opponent.  You call this a marquee game, sir?  A school who went 7-14 on third down conversions in their opener against mighty Youngstown State?  Who then failed in the following week to slam the door on Ohio U, requiring two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lock down even a mildly convincing win?  The Buckeyes averaged 3.9 yards passing and 4.1 yards rushing against a MAC team, and you want us to believe the ensuing curb-stomping in the Coliseum means anything?

I'm disappointed, USC.  You're rolling, but you don't have me convinced.  Beat a real football team, and we'll talk.

Your post is a bit off. OSU was a strong opponent on paper when the schedule to play was set what, 8 months ago? Is it Pete Carroll's fault Beanie Wells was out, and the rest of the Buckeyes didn't bother to show up? Do you blame Mike Garrett because OSU committed penalties when they least could afford it? USC scheduled two BCS conference opponents to play up front because the rest of the Pac-10 is so weak. Compare their schedule so far to the rest of the top-5 teams. If rankings are based on who you've played and how you've done and not who you're going to play and what might happen, it's no wonder why USC is #1 right now. What about OU at #2 without even getting a first place vote? The fact is, USC is a pro team playing in the FBS. Who do they need to beat to convince you how good they are, the Patriots? The Cowboys? The Giants? The Colts? I was sold on the Trojans after week 1; moreso after week 3. Until Georgia beats Florida by 28, and OU dismantles Texas, that opi...

...that opinion probably won't change. This season, I'll be rooting for USC every week except one: I've been a Notre Dame fan since the '78 Cotton Bowl.

A post that simultaneously insults USC and denigrates tOSU? Brava, my good lady. Brava.

Sorry to have winged this one so far over your head, Aaron, but it's all sarcasm. Except the part about Ohio State sucking. Because, wow.

This USC-Ohio State series was scheduled over 10 years ago.

Just sayin'. Back then both USC and OSU were on a down turn.

lol. Let me get my dunce cap on, then. I love satire - when I can recognize it, that is. Next time, maybe I should lurk a bit more to figure out what's going on before I go spouting off! Love the site btw...
